I Have Never Been Convicted of a Crime, But I Have a Criminal Record

Despite the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s insistence on repeatedly citing and arresting me for street performing; as well as the Clark County District Attorney’s office in prosecuting me, I have never been convicted of a crime. But equally troubling are the very real collateral consequences of having a criminal record.

In my opinion, it’s only fair that when a cop writes someone a [bogus] ticket, then that cop should be compelled to appear in court at trial when the ticket is disputed. But that has not been my experience. My experience is that I get cited (usually or obstructive use of sidewalk), I show up to multiple court dates, I go to trial, and then the case is dismissed at trial. None of the state’s witnesses are present, and the prosecutor is disoriented and unprepared. I don’t mind going to court, but it’s a pain in the ass to be on the 7th floor of the Regional Justice Center at 9:00am.
