On Thursday, October 6, 2022, showgirls Maris DiGiovanni, Victoria Cayetano, Selina and Anna Westby were working on the Las Vegas Strip near the Palazzo. Around 11:40am a man, later identified as 32-year-old Yoni Barrios, approached the four women asking for a photo. Moments later, he attacked all them with a kitchen knife and continued stabbing more victims before fleeing. Maris DiGiovanni, 30, and Brent Hallett, 47, died from their injuries. Both were local Las Vegas residents.
Barrios, an illegal/undocumented immigrant from Guatemala who recently traveled from California by bus, was charged with two counts of murder. He is being held at the Clark County Detention Center (CCDC). From several reports, there are indications that Barrios may suffer from mental illness.
There is a gofundme for the Maris DiGiovanni, a gofundme in Brent Hallet’s memory, a gofundme for the showgirls, and a gofundme for tourists Gabby and Cassy Hewes who were also stabbed.
Yoni Barrios was found unfit for trial in December 2022. He will remain at a psychiatric facility until further notice.
