Las Vegas is located in the desert and it gets really hot during the summer (duh!). Temperatures can reach 117°F (47°C) during the hottest of days. No surprises, nothing to see here right(?). But has it ever been so fucking hot for so fucking long during the summer months? Heat wave, heat dome, heat advisory– whatever the fuck you wanna call it, it’s fucking HOT! 2023 has been planet Earth’s hottest summer in recorded history, and it almost became the hottest summer for Las Vegas in terms of duration.
“On July 23, Las Vegas tied its 1962 record for consecutive days at 110 degrees at 10 days.” – Hottest July ever: Las Vegas on verge to break record (Las Vegas Review Journal)
Phoenix, AZ, the U.S’s 5th largest city located 300 miles southeast of Las Vegas, broke its record for the longest number of days over 100°F (37°C)— Twenty-four. And just speaking from personal experience as a native of Las Vegas, it’s NEVER felt so overwhelmingly hot that I’ve been discouraged from going outside at all. I guess this is one ugly consequence of climate change/global warming; but I’ve decided not to busk until the temperatures come down under 105°F (40°C).
My heart goes out to all those who *have to* work outside, live outside, and/or don’t have air-conditioned shelter.
